Today I am happy to introduce Karen Tyrrell and her book Jo-Kin Battles the IT. She has written several books for children and is a well known speaker about resilience issues. I am delighted to be part of her blog tour.
This is a great book filled with excitement and perils. Our hero, Josh Atkins, aka Jo-Kin, goes on a steep learning curve. It’s aimed at readers seven and up who are sure to enjoy the ride. I can see kids reading this imagining themselves in red cadet suits. They may picture themselves going out into the universe to battle monsters.
Against all the odds, Josh wins a competition. He has always dreamed of being a space cadet. Winning this could make it happen.
The surprises keep coming when he has to go to the secret academy to train. He meets Sam who is a fellow nerd. They have to learn to fight with their wits rather than strength. Some days Josh wins, and other days Sam does. Then they face a huge challenge and have to work together to defeat a terrible monster. Side by side they learn by their mistakes. They encourage each other. When Sam has trouble coping, Josh sticks by him. They work together to go and face their training and the monsters. Josh as space cadet Jo-Kin and Sam aka Sam-Wich go into battle against alien monsters. Then the It captures their trainer Captain Astra. Will they figure out a way to beat the monster? Will they save the universe and rescue Astra before It’s trap crushes her?
The illustrations throughout the book and the header of each chapter, hooks the reader for what is about to happen in the pages to come. Kids will have a blast with this book.
Again, Karen has presented a story that kids will relate to. Showing how overcoming adversity and self insecurity can lead to your dreams coming true. Helping kids learn that even if you feel you can’t cope, having a friend to be there for you gets you through.
I have to say that I admire Karen’s determination to spread the message of self reliance. Josh and Sam learn that through teamwork they can achieve over immense obstacles. She has battled some inner demons herself and triumphed to forge a career in writing. Each book has been a learning curve and she now presents her work with professional expertise. Karen provides teachers notes. Her web site is a showcase of her achievements. Her speaking engagements all enhance the experience for her target audience.
How could this book do anything but inspire young readers?
