Interview with Belinda Murrell

No prizes for guessing I love good Australian authors, and when this popped into my inbox I had to share it. Particularly, as I was so engrossed with a speaker at Somerset Literary Festival last year, that I didn’t realise the person next to me was Belinda Murrell! It was only when some children came up to her after the session and asked her to sign some books that I realised I missed an opportunity.

Author interview with Belinda Murrell

Belinda Murrell writes children’s fiction – both junior readers and for older children. Belinda kindly offered some insights into her writing:

1.    What does your workspace look like?

I live in an on old Victorian house near the sea with my husband Rob and three children. I am lucky enough to have a beautiful office at home, which is lined with hundreds of books, has a fireplace and looks out over my garden. My dog Asha keeps me company, sleeping in front of the fire. It is a gorgeous place to work – sunny, calm and quiet.

2.    Who or what inspires your work?

As a children’s author, perhaps it’s not surprising that kids are my greatest inspiration. Initially it was my own three children Nick, Emily and Lachie who inspired me to write books for them. Now however I am also inspired by readers who love my books and children I meet. One of the greatest inspirations is receiving hundreds of emails, drawings and letters from children who love my books. They tell me what they love about each book, and beg me to write more. I also spend several weeks each year on tour – speaking at literary festivals, schools, bookstores and Book Week events. Each year I meet thousands of children and I love talking with them, discussing what they enjoy about books, what interests them and intrigues them. Many of my ideas for books are triggered by conversations or experiences I’ve had with children.

3.    What advice would you offer aspiring writers?

I have four tips which all begin with P! They are:

Passion – write what you love. Write from your heart. Don’t try to follow trends. Write for yourself.

Persistence – there are so many writers with talent, who write extremely well. But to succeed as a writer you need bucketloads of determination and tenacity. Succeeding as a writer can only be achieved through lots of hard work over many years!

Practise – write constantly. Write every day. Take a notebook with you everywhere and fill it.

Pack your bags – travel the world and have amazing adventures. Work at various jobs, volunteer, experience life, fill your notebooks with sights, people and experiences.

4.    What was your reaction when you found out that your first manuscript was going to be published?

Utter joy! I screamed and cried and laughed. It was definitely one of the most exciting days in my life. My agent rang to tell me the news. My family all came running to find out what was going on. Then I rang my sister Kate (who is also an author). She was as thrilled as I was and we celebrated with French champagne. Despite all the excitement, I couldn’t really believe it was true until I first saw my name on the cover of a book in a bookstore.

5.    What dreams do you have for your writing career?

To keep writing books which kids love. To stretch myself and keep getting better as a writer. To challenge myself and try different genres and styles.  I have been incredibly lucky to have a career as a writer doing something I love so much. I work with a fantastic team at Random House who are so talented and supportive. I get to spend time with lots of extremely gifted and inspirational authors. I am now writing my twenty-first book, yet I still get very anxious when I finish a new book and am waiting for my publisher to read it. Will she like it? Is it any good? Writing can be a solitary and often difficult job. Yet opening that package with your book straight from the printer is still one of the best feelings in the world.

And a quick biography:

Belinda Murrell is an internationally published, bestselling children’s author. Her 21 books include The Sun Sword Trilogy, a fantasy-adventure series for boys and girls aged 8 to 12. Title: Song Bird – Superhero

Author: Karen Tyrrell

Publisher: Digital Future Press

Rosella Ava Bird dreams of flying. Will she ever do it? They’d just moved to a new home and she would be starting school nearby. Her new neighbor Frank Furter is mean to her. He points laser light at her and laughs when her flying inventions crash.

Her mum is a health and safety person and obsessed with keeping everyone away from danger. Friends at her old school called her mother hen because her mum fusses over her family. Especially Rosie, because she keeps building flying machines and other things that don’t work. Her dad cooks great breakfasts, and has an embarrassing car horn. He bans her from making anymore flying machines. Disaster!song-bird-out-now

Her sister and brother are both named after birds too.  Little brother Robin and big sister Raven. They start at their new schools the same day as Rosie.

Rosie loves superheroes and longs to be just like them. She watches the news for their acts of heroism. She has posters of her favourite inventors and flyers on her wall. She also loves to sing. Whenever she needs to be a bit braver she sings a song to herself. When she gets ready to go to her new school she packs her lunch in a bag with flying stickers on it.

Once she starts school she her dreams become very realistic. Sometimes they become nightmares with Frank Furter in them. He is in her grade and he turns out to be the bully at her new school. Will she fit in?ktyrrell-songbird-cover

The rules at the new school don’t make it easy;

DO NOT MAKE A SOUND,

DO NOT CREATE A MESS,

DO NOT BREAK A THING.

Even though things go wrong from the first day. Rosie makes friends and the School Science Fair gives her a project to be excited about. Maybe she could make something that will make the other kids like her. That’s if she’s able to enter it.

Her new teacher, Miss Darling, encourages her not to give up. Rosie starts to believe in herself. She discovers her voice can lift her off the ground. It’s amazing and causes her trouble too. When things go wrong at the science fair Rosie saves the day.

This is another great story of self-empowerment for children by Karen Tyrrell.song-bird-out-nowI’m sure it will go well with all her other books for children. I’ll be giving a copy to my granddaughters to read. I look forward to seeing more about how she came to write this book in the blog tour.

Jo-Kin vs LORD TERRA Super Space Kids 2

Karen Tyrrell and Jo-Kin vs Lord Terra

I am delighted to be part of this Blog Tour. Karen Tyrrell is an inspirational writer, speaker and award winning children’s resilience author. This Blog Tour is part of her launch of her second book in the Super Space Kids series, Jo-Kin vs Lord Terra. An action-packed FUN space adventure for kids 7-12 … into the cosmos.

Jo-Kin Battles the It, and Jo-Kin vs Lord Terra, (Super Space Kids). Are out NOW on Amazon and in book shops across the galaxy.

Don’t forget the Giveaway, post your comment to be in the running to win you’re own copy of this fun book.

This is my book review of Jo-Kin vs LORD TERRA Super Space Kids 2

Josh Atkins is happy at school. He is making friends and feeling good about himself. Whenktyrrell-jokin-cover-lsi.indd he gets a message to rejoin the Super Space Kids team again he tries to ignore it. When Captain Nova turns up at school and tells him that he has to help save his younger sister Pandora. He will collect Josh the next day at school, he tries to get out of it.

He is reluctant to take on the role of Super Space Kid again. Especially after his terrifying ordeal battling the IT! Captain Nova tells Josh he his friend Sam have to battle Lord Terra and his sidekick Prince Poison. Knowing that lives are at stake and Lord Terra is on his way to destroy Earth, he can’t refuse. His buddy Sam will be there with him won’t he?

Sam has an accident and can’t go on the mission. Who will replace him? The Super Space Kids have to work as a team to overcome this evil menace.

Leaving Earth Josh’s family arrive at the launch pad to see him off. His mother in her big rollers smothers him with kisses. His dad bites his nails and tells him to be careful because he’s scared of heights. His little sister demands he brings something back for her. And his baby brother clings to him.

Mitch the fourth member of their team is not a team player. Josh wonders why they chose him. Mitch goads Josh and disobeys the rules. Will they be able to overcome the hideous monster Lord Terra and his smelly side kick Prince Poison?

Karen Tyrell as Captain-AstraThe final battle taking place on the Planet Deelish-us will make kids mouths drool.  It smells like oven roasted pizza. With Rocky Road Mountains and hot chilli sauce erupting around them. Honeycombe Hill or Crinkle Cut Chips Canyon could hide the Junior Space kids. Giant wolf like creatures that eat people are there too. It’s a dangerous place to be.

This book reads like a comic book hero’s battling the forces of evil. It deals with facing your own fears and overcoming impossible odds. Karen Tyrrell has presented another readable book for kids with an underlying resilience theme. The illustrations match the comic book feel. It’s not hard to see that Josh will be blasting off on more epic adventures.

Jo-Kin vs Lord Terra blog tour is hotting up..

The last couple of days of this great Blog tour have really lifted the bar. We are getting great insights in Karen Tyrrell, her writing and message to kids. If you haven’t been following the tour check out these snippets from Dream Big .. Read Often and Just Write for Kids.
Writing Comedy for Kids By Karen Tyrrell on http://melissawray.blogspot.com.au/
What’s the trick to writing comedy for children?
Think like a kid. It’s all about having FUN!
Young children love slapstick comedy. People falling over and getting hit can be played for laughs. Timing is crucial. Kids giggle when geeky Joshua Atkins aka Super Space Kid Jo-Kin trips over, SPLAT onto the floor. Not once but many times.
How do you use exaggeration to write kid’s comedy?
Never under estimate a kid’s sense of the ridiculous.
Exaggerate all of your characters. Kids love exaggerated character traits and understand exaggerated characters more easily. Many successful characters aimed at kids have a single exaggerated trait. Kids love Jo-Kin’s exaggerated wacky family who do ridiculous things and show irrational fears, faults and flaws all exaggerated to the Nth degree.
Mum wears giant hair rollers, sings and smooches to her poodle. She smothers Jo-Kin with kisses. ‘Aww Mum!’
Dad loves to cook, wearing a chef’s hat. Hes scared of heights. Dad gets dizzy standing on a step … combing his hair …or taking a ride on a chair-o-plane.
Marty is Jo-Kin’s very needy little brother who loves to build Lego robots. He clings into Jo-Kin’s leg when he launches into space.
Stella is Jo-Kin’s kooky, annoying big sister. ‘Stella threw a tantrum, insisting we take her on a supersonic car ride right now … No way! BOOHOO!’
There’s so much more there so check it out!
